Bridal Hair Should Still Look Like You: Choosing the Right Wedding Hairstyle

Wedding hairstyles can become complicated very quickly.

You start with one saved picture.

Then someone sends you another.

Then you see a video online.

Then your bridesmaids have opinions.

Then someone tells you that brides are “supposed” to wear their hair a certain way.

Before long, you’re choosing a hairstyle based on everything except yourself.

At Jenny Creation, we believe your bridal hairstyle should make sense for you, your dress and the kind of wedding you’re actually having.

That might mean braids.

It might mean a wig.

It might be an updo.

Or it might be something that combines ideas from several different styles.

Start With Your Dress

Your hair doesn’t exist separately from the rest of your bridal look.

Look at your dress neckline, back and overall shape.

If the dress has details you specifically want visible, you may prefer a hairstyle that keeps hair away from those areas.

If your dress is relatively simple, you might decide to do more with your hair.

There’s no fixed rule. The point is to consider everything together.

Think About Your Veil and Accessories Early

Don’t choose a complete hairstyle and only then remember that you need somewhere to attach a veil.

If you’re wearing a veil, tiara, headpiece or other hair accessory, tell your stylist beforehand.

Better yet, bring it with you when appropriate.

The placement of accessories can affect the structure of the hairstyle.

Braids Can Work Beautifully for Weddings

Bridal hair doesn’t automatically mean loose curls or a traditional updo.

Braids can be used to create wedding looks that are neat, detailed and very different from everyday braiding styles.

If braids are already part of how you normally wear your hair, you don’t necessarily need to abandon them simply because you’re getting married.

Instead, think about how they can be adapted for the occasion.

A Wig Can Give You More Options

For some brides, a wig is the easiest route to the length, volume or texture they want.

A properly selected and installed wig also allows the natural hair to remain underneath while the bride wears a completely different look.

If you’re considering this option, don’t leave the wig decision until the last minute.

You want enough time to choose the wig, check the fit and decide how it should be styled.

Consider the Entire Day

Wedding hair has a long job.

It may need to get through preparation, photographs, the ceremony, more photographs, the reception and dancing.

When choosing your style, think about how it will feel after several hours—not just how it looks immediately after it’s finished.

If you know you’ll be dancing all night, say so.

If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, mention that too.

Your actual wedding plans matter.

Don’t Suddenly Become Someone Else

Your wedding is probably not the best time to choose a hairstyle you would never normally consider simply because someone said it looks “bridal.”

You should still recognize yourself.

That doesn’t mean you can’t do something special or dramatic.

It simply means the style should feel intentional rather than like a costume you’re wearing for photographs.

Bring Pictures, but Don’t Be Married to Them

Reference photos are useful.

Bring several if necessary.

But rather than saying, “I need this exact hairstyle,” explain what you like about each one.

Maybe you like the front of one hairstyle and the volume of another.

Maybe you like a braided detail but want a different finish at the back.

Those conversations can lead to something much more personal than copying a single picture exactly.

Don’t Forget the Bridal Party

If Jenny Creation will also be styling members of your bridal party, discuss this in advance.

Knowing how many people need their hair done and what types of styles they want makes planning much easier.

Wedding mornings already have enough moving parts.

Hair shouldn’t become an unexpected one.

Plan Ahead

Good wedding hair starts before the wedding morning.

Decide what you’re doing early enough to make changes if necessary.

If a wig is involved, have it ready.

If you’re adding accessories, know what they are.

If you have questions about how your hair should be prepared, ask.

The more decisions you make beforehand, the less you’ll have to figure out while everyone is getting dressed.

Your Wedding, Your Hair

There’s no single hairstyle every bride should wear.

At Authentic Braids & Wigs by Jenny Creation, our work goes beyond one type of hair service. We work with braids, wigs, locs and special-occasion hairstyling, which gives us more room to find an approach that fits the look you have in mind.

You don’t have to choose something simply because it’s what everyone else is doing.
